MouseCat Helps Coinbase Scale Fraud & Scam Investigations, Driving Millions in Annual Savings

Coinbase has partnered with MouseCat to help scale fraud investigations and support proactive anomaly detection. Just a few weeks into the partnership, MouseCat began processing thousands of cases to complement Coinbase’s existing fraud detection, machine learning models, and analyst reviews. Will Megson, Vice President of Product at Coinbase, says “it has been great working with the MouseCat team. We’ve given our risk analyst team a lot more leverage alongside our existing ML models and rules, and seeing close to 90% analyst-agreement rates on correctly identifying fraud and scams – it surprised me how well it’s working.”
Solution
Coinbase operates multiple fraud-detection and investigation capabilities designed to help protect users. As an additional tool, MouseCat runs in the background alongside these systems, conducting fraud investigations on activity that would otherwise not have human review. When MouseCat identifies an anomaly, the case is routed for automated action or human review based on Coinbase’s Risk policies. Proactively surfacing these anomalies drives millions in annualized savings through preventing fraud losses and improved operational efficiency.
By helping with initial investigative work on eligible cases, MouseCat can give Coinbase’s risk teams more capacity to focus on higher priority and higher leverage work. MouseCat’s deployment model supports integration with Coinbase’s existing risk environment and internal systems. The implementation is designed to operate subject to Coinbase’s applicable security, privacy, and data-handling requirements. We’ve been able to deeply integrate MouseCat with our existing Risk systems and avoid transferring sensitive data out of our environment.”
